Top 5 Tips for How to Work Best With Your Builder

October 2025 Tips & Advice 3 min read

A renovation is one of the biggest investments you will make in your home, and the relationship you build with your builder plays a huge role in how smoothly the project runs. Over the years, we have found that the most successful projects are the ones where communication is open, expectations are clear, and both parties are working towards the same goal. Here are our top five tips for getting the best possible outcome from your building project.

1. Be clear about your priorities from the start. Before work begins, take the time to articulate what matters most to you. Is it staying on budget? Finishing by a certain date? Achieving a specific design outcome? When your builder understands your priorities, they can plan the project accordingly and flag any potential conflicts early. 2. Appoint one decision maker. Renovation projects involve hundreds of decisions, from tile selections to powerpoint locations. Having one person in the household responsible for sign offs avoids confusion and keeps the project moving. If you need to discuss options with your partner, that is perfectly fine, but try to present a unified decision to your builder.

3. Communicate changes early and in writing. Changes during construction are normal, but they need to be communicated clearly. If you want to move a door, upgrade a benchtop, or add an extra powerpoint, let your builder know as soon as possible and confirm the change in writing (even a text message is fine). This ensures everyone is on the same page and any cost or timeline implications are understood before work proceeds. 4. Trust the process. There will be stages of the build where progress feels slow or the site looks chaotic. This is completely normal. Structural work, plumbing rough ins, and waterproofing are all critical steps that happen before the exciting finishes go in. Trust that your builder is following the right sequence and ask questions if you are unsure about what is happening.

5. Keep the lines of communication open. A good builder will provide regular updates, but do not hesitate to ask questions or raise concerns as they come up. Weekly site meetings or a simple check in message can prevent small misunderstandings from becoming bigger issues. At Renovista, we pride ourselves on transparent communication throughout every project, because we believe the best results come from genuine collaboration between our team and our clients.
